Bruce and Paul from Shed to Summit take a hands-on look at common and lesser-known fire-lighting options for camping, bushcraft, and hot tent setups.

We start with flint and steel, using char cloth, jute, and fatwood. This is a traditional method that takes practice but works without gas or batteries.

We then test four modern fire starters side by side to see which burns longest and which works best when conditions are damp.

Fire starters tested in this video:

• Flint and steel with char cloth and fatwood

• Cotton wool with Vaseline

• Wood wool fire lighters

• Zip barbecue lighter

• Burnex fire lighters

All fire starters are lit at the same time so you can clearly see burn time and flame strength. This matters when your wood is wet and you need a reliable way to get a fire going.

This video is aimed at woodland camping, bushcraft skills, hot tent camping, and general outdoor use.
